DENTON, TX (January 17, 2018) – The Denton Housing Authority and United Way of Denton County together announced the allocation of $250,000 of non-federal funds by the Denton Housing Authority to be administered by the United Way of Denton County to provide services and programs for the benefit of low-income families in Denton County.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to preventing or ending an individual or family’s homeless experience. Many low-income families who struggle to maintain livable wages are at risk of losing their housing with the occurrence of seemingly minor, yet unforeseen, life events such as a flat tire or a sick child. Furthermore, opportunities for advancement for these families, such as training programs enabling increased income, are often limited or inaccessible due to cost or other factors (childcare, transportation, etc.).

“The Denton Housing Authority plays a key role in Denton County’s Housing Crisis Response System by providing rental assistance to low-income families and developing affordable housing,” explained Gary Henderson, President & CEO for United Way of Denton County.

The decreased availability of funding for low-income families over time motivated the Denton Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners to create a fund to promote housing stability and self-sufficiency. The United Way of Denton County will administer funds to local agencies that help families obtain and maintain housing. Funds may support the following services for these families: mental health services, job training, household finance, childcare, education or training courses, etc. and will be accessible via grants to applying agencies who meet determined guidelines.

“I am pleased that the Denton Housing Authority has been able to earn funds from various housing ventures that we can now provide to the Denton community,” stated Dr. Kathryn Stream, Chair of the Board of Commissioners.

“United Way of Denton County, as a proven leader in assessing the needs of the community and identifying service areas in which to build capacity of the local nonprofit system, was selected to administer these funds on behalf of the Denton Housing Authority,” explained Sherri McDade, CEO at Denton Housing Authority

The United Way of Denton County has taken an integral role in the county’s approach to achieve the vision of making homelessness rare, brief and nonrecurring through its backbone support of the Denton County Homelessness Leadership Team (DCHLT). DCHLT is a public-private collaboration with the City of Denton and United Way of Denton County to foster an effective and coordinated system of homelessness prevention and intervention.
