The 2026 tax season is quickly approaching, and we need community volunteers to help boost the financial stability of low-income families in our area by providing free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
With eight locations across Denton County from Carrollton to Sanger, we are recruiting volunteers from all around the County. Training is happening now and will be ongoing until late January with in-person, virtual, and self-paced options available.
We need a variety of volunteers beyond just tax preparation roles. Translators and intake volunteers are also help ensure a smooth tax season. No prior experience is required for any of these volunteer opportunities, and all shifts offer flexible hours to accommodate the schedules of volunteers.
“Last year our group of volunteers filed over 2,010 tax returns, resulting in $1.5 million in returns for hard-working families who often live paycheck to paycheck,” explained Samantha Shead, our Economic Mobility Initiatives Manager. “With over 112,000 households living at or below the survival level in Denton County, we know that the only thing limiting our ability to serve more people is our level of volunteer support."
Established by the IRS, we implemented VITA in 2008. Since then, the program has proved to be an effective economic mobility tool to improve the financial security of low-to-moderately-low income residents of Denton County.
To date, Denton County VITA volunteers have facilitated the filing of over 16,000 tax returns, securing over $20.5 million in tax refunds, and saving the community $5 million in tax preparation fees. That’s over $25 million returning to the Denton County economy!
Our VITA program works in collaboration with public libraries in Carrollton (Hebron & Josey Branch), Denton (North Branch), Lewisville, Little Elm, Pilot Point, Sanger, and The Colony. VITA is supported with funding from the Internal Revenue Service, Charles Schwab, and the City of Carrollton.
