With close staff supervision, interns are highly involved in all aspects and levels of our organization, learning crucial skills, earning valuable experience, and developing a robust network of contacts to help them as they develop into professionals. Marketing & Communications Interns
Communications & Public Relations
Assists Director of Communications/Marketing in planning, development, and execution of marketing, communications and public relations strategies in support of UWDC community impact and resource development efforts. Under the supervision of Director of Marketing & Communications with 25+ years in corporate and nonprofit CSR. This is a valuable internship with extensive opportunity for hands-on learning to build your skills and portfolio. Routine feedback provided with weekly meetings and evaluation.
Specific assignments/roles may be assigned in any of the following areas (depending on schedule and tenure):
- Produce, write, and edit content for e-newsletter, annual report, media alerts, press releases, website
- Donor communications & relations
- Curating and publishing social media content
- Photo & Video capturing and editing
- Event planning and management
- Work collaboratively with multiple departments on projects or events that benefit the organization as a whole
- Other duties as assigned such as mailings, supplies and facilities management, and preparation for meetings
Expected Work Schedule: Standard office hours (9:00am - 5:00pm)
Expected Hours per Week: 10-20 hours
Qualifications: Strong writing and editing skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office suite; strong creative skills, highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines, computer savvy with a working knowledge of social media. Photography and videography skills a plus; proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite 5.0 or later preferred.

Graphic Design
Assists Director of Marketing/Communications in planning, development, and execution of marketing collateral, infographics, social graphics, website graphics, and email design in support of UWDC community impact and resource development efforts. Under the supervision of Director of Marketing & Communications with 25+ years in corporate and nonprofit CSR. This is a valuable internship with extensive opportunity for hands-on learning to build your skills and portfolio. Routine feedback provided with weekly meetings and evaluation.
Specific assignments/roles may be assigned in any of the following areas (depending on schedule and tenure):
- E-Newsletter design
- Brochures, Posters, Flyer Designs
- Infographic Design
- Sponsorship catalog design
- Print advertisements
- Website and social media graphics
- HTML
- Photo & Video capturing and editing
- Work collaboratively with multiple departments on projects or events that benefit the organization as a whole
- Other duties as assigned
Expected Work Schedule: Standard office hours (9:00am - 5:00pm)
Expected Hours per Week: 10-20 hours
Qualifications: Well-versed in Adobe Creative Suite Creative (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Knowledge of Premiere and/or After Effects a plus), strong creative skills, highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines, computer savvy with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media. Photography and videography skills a plus.

Video Production
Assists Director of Marketing/Communications in planning, development, and creation of promotional videos as part of the organization's overall marketing, communications and public relations strategies in support of UWDC community impact and resource development efforts. Under the supervision of Director of Marketing & Communications with 25+ years in corporate and nonprofit CSR. This is a valuable internship with extensive opportunity for hands-on learning to build your skills and portfolio. Routine feedback provided with weekly meetings and evaluation.
Specific assignments/roles may be assigned in any of the following areas (depending on schedule and tenure):
- Editing of existing Campaign video footage for production of vignettes for website and social media
- Video Compilation and Editing for UNITED Tribute Gala and other special events
As needed, Marketing, Communications & Public Relations Interns may also be assigned to work collaboratively with multiple departments on projects or events that benefit the organization as a whole.

Community Impact & Program Initiatives Internships
Social Work Interns, Behavioral Health, Health Studies, Public Health, Nonprofit Leadership
Are you a BS or MS student looking to make a meaningful impact while gaining real-world experience? UWDC offers a variety of internship placements designed to help you apply classroom learning in both macro (community-level) and micro (individual-level) settings. At UWDC, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how different levels of social work practice intersect and influence one another. While most of our work focuses on macro-level initiatives, micro-level opportunities are available and vary by semester.

Development Intern
Nonprofit Development Intern
Donor Stewardship
- Draft personalized thank you letters and acknowledgments for donors
- Support donor communication across email, phone, and written channels
- Help maintain meaningful touchpoints that strengthen long-term donor relationships
Prospect Research
- Research potential donors and major gift prospects to support the development pipeline
- Compile donor profiles including background, giving history, interests, and key dates
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in the donor database
Event Support
- Assist with planning and execution of fundraising events and donor gatherings
- Support event logistics including setup, breakdown, and day-of coordination
- Represent United Way at community tabling events and engagement opportunities
Administrative & Operations Support
- Assist with general development department tasks and correspondence
- Contribute to the creation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Help build and organize a departmental continuity binder to support long-term team knowledge
What We're Looking For
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, public relations, business, or a related field
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with CRM or donor databases a plus
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail
- Genuine interest in nonprofit work, fundraising, and community impact
- Self-starter who can work independently and as part of a team
