Denton County Emergency Rental Assistance closed on March 31, 2023 to new applications.
The Denton County Emergency Rental Assistance Program, in partnership with United Way of Denton County, was designed to assist Denton County residents experiencing financial hardship during or due, directly or indirectly, to the coronavirus outbreak with rental assistance, utility assistance, and/or housing stability services.

 

Due to the significant number of requests for assistance, priority has been given to applications for households with:

  • a Notice to Vacate/Eviction Notice,
  • AND households with children, or seniors or persons receiving disability benefits;
  • AND households with income below 30% Area Median Income (AMI).

Various forms of documentation are required by this program to determine eligibility, and if eligible, to determine the amount of financial assistance available per applicant. If you have questions regarding this application or need assistance, please call our Helpline at 940-566-2688.

Eligibility criteria for BOTH Tenant AND Landlord are outlined in the two sets of criteria below. Before proceeding, it is recommended that both parties discuss and agree that they are both willing and able to proceed and that both will complete the online application, provide all required items, and abide by all required terms.

Eligibility Criteria for Tenant: 
 

  1. Must be a Denton County resident, with proof of residency, and residing in the property that is in question as primary residence and; 
  2. One or more individuals in the household must have qualified for unemployment benefits or has experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs, or experienced other financial hardship during or due, directly or indirectly, to the coronavirus outbreak that can be documented and; 
  3. One or more individuals in the household must be able to demonstrate a risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability, which may include a past due utility or rent notice or eviction notice; unsafe or unhealthy living conditions; or any other evidence of such risk; and; 
  4. Must be able to provide a fully executed rental lease or agreement where the lease is in the Applicant’s name and the Applicant is responsible for monthly rent payments and; 
  5. The aggregate amount of financial assistance an eligible household may receive must not exceed 18 months.

Eligibility Criteria for Landlord:  
 

  1. Must provide a valid W-9 for payment to the owner of the rental property. 
  2. Must confirm that any rental arrears submitted for consideration are for Denton County property(ies) only.
