Unemployment Compensation Is Taxable?

Yikes!! It’s taxable??

Did you know that unemployment compensation is taxable? That might come as a surprise to many people who are receiving these payments for the first time.

By law, unemployment compensation is taxable and must be reported on a 2020 federal income tax return. Taxable benefits include any of the special unemployment compensation authorized under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, enacted this spring.

Dr. Roy Watson likes to volunteer. And he’s proud to be the oldest (in more ways than one!) volunteer for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program of United Way of Denton County. 
 
The educator who taught English for 34 years at both the college (Bishop) and high school (Dallas ISD) levels, retired in 1998 at age 60 but “wasn’t ready to put my feet up.”
 
Roy moved to Aida, OK after retirement where he started volunteering to do other people’s taxes.
 
“I enjoy doing taxes,” explained Roy. “I like the challenge.

Our Director of Mental Health and Housing Initiatives Courtney Cross had a busy October sharing her expertise in area of homelessness at the Texas Homeless Network (THN) Conference on Ending Homelessness in Houston and the 9th Annual Housing and Urban Development Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD VASH) Summit in Fort Worth.

Homeless to Housed Exhibit

After a week-long rain delay, UWDC joined the Denton County Homelessness Leadership Team and the Denton County Homeless Coalition to showcase the most current homelessness data in the “Homeless to Housed” Exhibit on the lawn of the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square.
