United Way of Denton County Honors Community Volunteers
Denton, Texas (March 23, 2010): Over 130 people attended the United Way of Denton County Volunteer Appreciation Reception on March 10th at Grand Traditions in Corinth. The yearly event honors community members who offer their time and talents as volunteers for United Way.
United Way Campaign Cabinet Chair Caleb O’Rear presented tokens of recognition to members of the 2009 – 2010 Campaign Cabinet, including a special memorial tribute to Angie Jester-Sahm, who served on United Way’s Campaign Cabinet before her passing in November of last year.
Participants in the United Way Leaders on Loan program were also recognized at the event, with a special award presented to April Rocconi of NorthStar Bank of Texas for being named “LoL of the Year.”
Gary Henderson, Executive Director of Communities in Schools of North Texas, was named Speaker of the Year for 2009 for his tireless commitment to speaking throughout the community on behalf of United Way.
The event also honored the various United Way volunteer committees and the chairs who lead them.
“We absolutely could not do what we do here at United Way without the dedication and support of our wonderful volunteers,” United Way President and CEO Lilia Bynum said. “We are so lucky to live and work in a community like Denton County that is full of people willing to donate their time and expertise to United Way. These folks LIVE UNITED every day.”
Bynum also recognized the hard work and dedication of United Way Board Chair Mary Ann McDuff, Director of Academic Financial Services at Texas Woman’s University. McDuff’s term as Board Chair expires in April. McDuff was presented with a framed original watercolor created by Mark Harris, an award-winning painter and graphic artist in the TWU Office of Marketing and Communication.
“Mary Ann has been described as larger than life and a force of nature. She takes that passion for life to serve the people and community she loves and her passion is widely admired by friends, the Board of Directors, volunteers and staff,” Bynum said.
Guests were treated to an hors d'oeuvre buffet by Extreme Cuisine Catering and a cake from Candy Haven, as well as beverages donated by Ben E. Keith Beers and Miller of Denton.
Each guest went home with a framed print of the original watercolor created by Harris and presented to McDuff. The image was used through the 2009 – 2010 United Way campaign, along with the theme “Give Help. Give Hope.”
