The Allocation Process
Each year approximately 75 community volunteers make important decisions regarding how the money raised in the fundraising campaign is invested locally to address existing and emerging needs in Denton County. These volunteers review agency program and outcome information, read financial reports and audits, and visit each funded community partner annually to determine funding needs and ensure high quality services in the community.
Each funded community partner completes a thorough application process to become a United Way Partner Agency. Listed are a few of the requirements:
- Provide a locally needed health and human service that falls within at least one of United Way’s 3 Focus areas of Education, Income & Health
- Be recognized by the IRS as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization
- By governed by a volunteer board of directors
- Be audited annually by a CPA firm
- Keep administrative and fundraising costs below 25% of gross receipts
- Be an established agency with a local (Denton County) presence for at least 3 years
