Job Description:
The grant writer will become knowledgeable of the programs and services offered by United Way of Denton County, research funding sources and write and prepare grant applications. More specifically:
- Through interviews and other means, gather information that will easily allow him/her to grasp the concept of a project or program for which funding is sought as defined by the Community Impact Director or Community Resources Director.
- Acquire and maintain sound knowledge and understanding of the organization, and use that knowledge and understanding to better comprehend all projects and programs for which grants may/will be sought and to recommend the seeking of grants.
- Research grant-making organizations (locally and through provided great search subscription and the internet) and analyze them to identify likely funding sources for specific projects and programs.
- Compile, write, and edit all grant applications exhibiting strong expository writing skills and a high-level command of grammar and spelling.
- Review and/or assist in the creation of the budget of a project or program for which funding is sought and make recommendations to better present it to grant-making organizations.
- Develop individual grant proposals in accordance with each grant-making organization's preferences and follow exactly each grant-making organization's guidelines.
- Keep in contact with grant-making organizations during their review of a submitted grant application in order to be able to supply additional supportive material (if allowed during internship, otherwise update staff on the timeline/monitoring process).
- Manage the process of supplying progress reports when required by a grant-making organization that has funded a project or program.
General Requirements:
Adhere to business casual dress code when working at the office. Must have above average writing/grammar skills. Must write clearly and informatively, varying writing style to meet needs. Must present numerical data effectively and be able to read and interpret written information. Must pay attention to detail and be deadline-oriented. Grant writer must be well organized and self-motivated. Experience with and knowledge of computer operation including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and the internet.

Marketing/PR/Campaign Internship*
Objective
This position helps United Way better fulfill its mission to advance the common good. You will become an integral team member of United Way and have a vital role in preparation of marketing and communications materials. You will also have the opportunity to lead projects, be creative, develop a portfolio, and promote philanthropy.
Nature And Scope
This position reports directly to the Marketing & Communications Director and is responsible for support of specific marketing and communications activities.
Spring Semester:
- Assists in planning and implementation of special events as assigned
- Organizes production of awards/certificates
- Assists in production of mailings related to donor communications
- Attend marketing and special events committee meetings
- Provide assistance with communications materials, including brochures, annual report, campaign video, etc.
- Work with staff and marketing committee to incorporate UWA “brand messaging” into all local United Way materials.
- Assist in preparing and posting copy on website.
- Research, interview and write success stories within the United Way system. These stories could be used in newsletters, website and print materials, as well as possible story angles for the news media.
- Update/maintain media contacts
- Attend United Way events and assist as requested
- Assist in promotion of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites
- Take photos as requested
- Research/produce collateral materials as directed
- Assists Marketing & Communications Director in other activities as needed
Summer Semester: *Summer 2008 is full
- Assists in planning and implementation of special events as assigned
- Organizes production of awards/certificates
- Assists in production of mailings related to donor communications
- Attend marketing, special events, and campaign cabinet committee meetings
- Provide assistance with communications materials as needed
- Assists with data base management, including building an email database for launch of e-newsletter and communications materials
- Work with staff and marketing committee to incorporate UWA “brand messaging” into all local United Way materials.
- Assist in preparing and posting copy on website.
- Research, interview and write success stories within the United Way system. These stories could be used in newsletters, website and print materials, as well as possible story angles for the news media.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc) and the internet required. Knowledge of website maintenance, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator) desired. Background in English, Marketing, or Journalism preferred. Ability to speak and write in Spanish desired.

Internship: Program Intern
Term(s): Spring, Summer, Fall – Dependent on Program Chosen*
Job Description:
The following programs are open to student internships: Healthy Communities (year round), Financial Stability (Fall/Spring) , Emergency/Disaster Coordination (year round).
Though many specific duties will vary depending on the program, ALL programs require the following:
- Learn the material on the chosen program well enough to speak on it and teach it to others.
- Attend coalition/community meetings and coordinate efforts with community partners.
- Evaluate current effectiveness and recommend improvements to the program based upon community research.
- Implement and track outcome measurements for the program and prepare report that can be used in communication to the board of directors, community funders and in grant writing.
- Provide office/administrative support for chosen program.
- Other duties as assigned.

Internship: SECC Internship

United Way of Denton County serves as the Local Campaign Manager (LCM) for the State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC). The SECC was created in 1993 to enable the state agency and higher education employees the benefit of giving to many of their favorite charities through and annual workplace giving campaign which offers the convenience of payroll deduction.
Job Description:
- Plan, coordinate and execute SECC for UWDC according to the rules and regulation of each campaign.
- Provide assistance to the Local Campaign Manager (LCM) and Chair of the Local Employee Committee (LEC) for meetings and other events.
- Create and distribute appropriate materials for SECC.
- Coordinate with Employee Campaign Coordinators (ECC’s) at UNT and TWU to offer assistance with the SECC campaign.
- Provide office/administrative support for SECC.
- Other duties as assigned.
