Providing tools for financial stability
Providing the tools necessary for happy
and healthy children in our community.

Giving kids a healthy smile!
In 2007, United Way of Denton County (UWDC) launched a new initiative to promote financial stability among low-to-moderate-income families and individuals in Denton County.
The Reasons
So what are we doing?
United Way of America has identified a 3 step process of addressing financial stability: Increase Income, Build Savings, and Gain and Sustain Assets.
United Way of Denton County is beginning this process by coordinating with local and national partners to open free tax-prep sites for low-to-moderate-income workers, and educating and assisting in helping workers apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit. Workers will also be given choices of where to invest their refunds to benefit the financial health of their families.
Last year, the IRS estimates that $15 million in credits went unclaimed by Denton County residents. UWDC is helping families access the money available to them and choose how to best provide for their families.
The People's Clinic of Denton County continues to thrive and provide indigent healthcare to uninsured or underinsured individuals in Denton County. United Way worked with members of the Healthy Communities Coalition for 5 years to raise awareness of community needs and develop plans for work in various health and medical disciplines. The People's Clinic was established as a result of the collaborative effort among public, private and non-profit organizations.
Give Kids a Smile Day
Give Kids a Smile Day is an annual event in February in which United Way works with local school nurses, dentists and dental hygienists to distribute thousands of dental kits containing toothbrushes, paste and other materials to children in daycares, preschools and local school districts. Educational materials are also distributed to parents on how to maintain their children's teeth. This program gives attention to dental access and prevention problems among children from rural and/or low-income families. In 2007, United Way of Denton County partnered with Dr. Norm Pomerance, DDS, the TWU Dental Hygiene Clinic and Colgate Corporation to make this a successful event.
